Jan Kaláb, born in 1978 in Czechoslovakia, has emerged as one of the country’s most prominent contemporary artists. His artistic journey, rooted in the vibrant world of graffiti, street art, and murals, has taken him from the nascent Prague scene to prestigious galleries across the globe.

Kaláb defined his early years by pioneering Prague’s graffiti community. His first visit to New York in the summer of 2000, which he saw as the Mecca of graffiti, left an unforgettable mark on his artistic vision—fulfilling his dream of painting on a New York subway car near the Mets stadium instilled in him a profound sense of accomplishment and the belief that he could succeed in anything he set his mind to.

As his style evolved, Kaláb began to explore new forms of expression. His early 3D graffiti pieces opened the door to abstraction, while his geometric paintings were perhaps subconsciously influenced by his early experiments with painting cobblestones. Each step in his artistic journey built upon the previous, revealing a path of continuous growth and discovery.

One of Kaláb’s most striking works is a surreal autobiographical mural he painted in 1997 before murals gained widespread popularity. This piece, which still stands today, has become a cherished part of the neighborhood’s fabric, a testament to the enduring power of his art.

Kaláb’s hands-on approach to large installations and sculptures reflects his deep commitment to his craft. He is not content to merely direct others; instead, he actively participates in physical labor, seeing it as an integral part of the artistic process. This dedication is evident in how he plays with color, light, and shadow on unconventional surfaces, creating geometric compositions that span multiple-shaped canvases.

A turning point in Kaláb’s career came when he realized that his role as a street artist had evolved. His early “point bird” 3D street art tags, placed around cities in the mid-2000s, later transformed into more meaningful bronze and glass gallery sculptures. This shift marked a significant moment in his artistic journey as he embraced new challenges and opportunities.

Throughout his career, Kaláb has learned valuable lessons that continue to guide his work. He believes in the power of action over overthinking, recognizing that not everything in art needs to be confident and predictable. His ambitious projects, such as his work on a Porsche, have pushed him to overcome limitations and reach new heights.

Today, Jan Kaláb’s work can be found in high-profile galleries worldwide, from New York and Miami to London, Paris, Shanghai, and Rio de Janeiro. His art consistently explores new techniques and structures, geometrizing morphology, precise acrylic painting, and layered surfaces. Through his work, he analyzes space within a classic ideology, redirecting the known into the unknown, into a new dimension.

Despite his prolific career, Kaláb remains driven by an insatiable hunger to create more and dream bigger. He lives and creates in Prague, and his everlasting commitment, the joy of playful discovery, and belief in infinite possibilities guide him on his artistic adventure.
