Plaid represents a fresh direction for Hendry, with two-dimensional drawings composed of perpendicular lines and dry brush strokes. This new approach diverges from her previous glossy, three-dimensional paint drawings, highlighting her versatility as an artist. To further elevate the concept, Hendry has designed a 5,000 sqft labyrinth installation called “Plaidground” for adults to explore and play in, reflecting the Plaid pattern in her works.

Cj Hendry’s art goes beyond aesthetics, with a strong emphasis on the viewer’s experience. By magnifying and extending the literal elements of her work, she aims to create immersive experiences that add depth to the hyperrealism genre. Hendry believes that Plaid invites viewers to reconnect with their inner child, experiencing the simple joy of play before adulthood’s burdens take hold.

The idea for Plaid emerged from Hendry’s observations of public parks and playgrounds, which she found lacking in sophistication and artistic value. She pondered the potential of transforming playgrounds into public art sculptures but recognized the challenges of collaborating with government bodies. Unwilling to compromise, Hendry decided to take matters into her own hands, bringing her vision to life with Plaidground.

So, mark your calendars and prepare to embrace your inner child. Cj Hendry’s Plaid exhibition is sure to be an unforgettable journey into the realms of art, play, and nostalgia.

More on CJ Hendry

CJ Hendry (b. 1988) is a New York-based artist originally from Brisbane, Australia. Hendry transforms her fascination with contemporary material culture into large-scale, hyper-photorealistic drawings. Cj Hendry’s exhibits aren’t intended to be passively observed but, rather, actively experienced through engaging, fun, and thought-provoking exhibits. For her exhibit ‘Monochrome,’ Hendry and her team built an entire multi-room “home” inside a warehouse with each room entirely monochrome-colored from floor to ceiling and everything in between. For ‘Rorschach,’ guests jumped through a gigantic bouncy house maze in order to reach and finally view the impressive series. Epilogue saw Hendry renovate a dilapidated London church and had 10 tonnes of petal shaped confetti drop from the ceiling over the 10-day exhibition run. Each Cj Hendry exhibit, from Miami to Melbourne, draws massive crowds with attendees waiting in line for several hours – and, in the end, everyone leaves more enriched than when they arrived. With her celebrity clientele – and many works in private collections – Hendry’s waitlist is now well over 12,000 collectors with a wait time of up to five years to get their hands on a piece.
